HOA Fence Rules in Huntsville and Madison: What to Know Before You Build

Approval, height, style, color and placement: what to check before a single post goes in the ground.

Every HOA Is Different

There's no single set of HOA fence rules in Huntsville or Madison. Each neighborhood has its own covenants, and many have an architectural review committee that has to approve your fence before it goes up. This guide covers what to look for. Your HOA's documents have the final word.

Find Your Covenants

Look for your HOA's covenants, restrictions or architectural guidelines, often on the HOA's website or portal, or from your management company. Search for "fence" and read every section that mentions it.

Check the Common Rules

These are the items HOAs most often regulate:

  • Height: often a maximum for backyard fences, and lower or none in front yards
  • Style and material: some HOAs approve only certain styles, like shadowbox, or require aluminum in certain spots
  • Color: many require staining in an approved color within a set time
  • Good side out: the finished side may need to face neighbors or the street
  • Placement: how far back from the front of the house the fence must start, and corner lot rules
  • Easements: drainage and utility easements along lot lines

Submit for Approval

Most HOAs ask for a short application with the fence style, height, material, color and a sketch of where it goes on your lot. We provide those details for our customers. Don't start building until you have approval in writing.

Check City Rules Too

Separate from your HOA, the city or county may have rules about fence height and placement, especially on corner lots and near the street. If you're unsure, call the planning or permits office for your city.

Locate Utilities

Before any digging, underground utilities must be marked. We make sure that's done before we set posts.
